Peranakan Cuisine- Blue Ginger

If you are a fan of Little Nyonya, take a visit to Blue Ginger Restaurant located at Tanjong Pagar Road. The restaurant has a Nyonya-themed design, and gives me a cozy yet contemporary feel about the atmosphere. The ambience insider the restaurant is very casual and heartwarming, and there is private dinning area at 3rd floor, where families, friends and loved ones can come together and share hearty laughs over a tradition Peranakan meal.

For starters, I had ‘Kueh Pie Tee’ and ‘Ngo Heong’. ‘Kueh Pie Tee’ is shredded bamboo shoots and turnips garnished with shrimp in pie tee cups. The juicy, flavorful carrot radish filing bursts out from the crisp yet delicate pastry cups the moment you pop one into your mouth. The explosion of flavors makes it easy to see why this item is one of the restaurant’s signature dishes. The ‘Ngo Heong’ is actually home rolls of minced pork and prawns seasoned with five-spice powder wrapped and fried to crispy golden brown. The rolls are accompanied by a sweet dark soya sauce and were truly fragrant and crunchy.

The ‘Babi Pong Tay’ – stewed pork shoulder with preserved bean paste flavored with cinnamon was fragrant. The portions are alright, and the juicy layer of fats definitely enhances a more luscious finish. The dish that I am most delighted about is the Beef Rendang. This is one of the house special dishes, and indeed, this is the ‘must try’ dish you should never miss. The tender beef cubes prepared in rich coconut milk spiced with ginger, lemongrass, lime leaves and a dash of curry powder. Honestly, I have never tasted such excellent and well prepared Beef Rendang. The gravy went so well with the beef and really makes you want to eat more rice.

We ended the main dish with Sambal Prawns, and unfortunately not as outstanding as the first two dishes that I mentioned above. They serve the stir-fried prawns in rich, hot and spicy chilli paste, but the taste is a little bit ‘too much’ to me

I had Chendol for my dessert, and I must say that I had slight reservations about the taste, maybe the coconut milk is not strong enough, but the reservation are personal. My friend told me that he enjoyed the Chendol very much!

Service was excellent and attentive. The service staff had excellent knowledge of the good that was being served. Overall, Blue Ginger is an amazing dining experience. I am definitely going back for another Peranankan feast.
